Successful Replantation of a Severed Finger After 34 Hours: Experts Emphasize the Importance of Proper Finger Preservation Principles!

The golden time for finger replantation is typically only 6-8 hours. However, a recent "finger-saving miracle" unfolded in Guangzhou: a 24-year-old man accidentally severed his finger while working in a Southeast Asian country. After seeking medical help locally to no avail, he flew back to Guangzhou with the severed finger. Despite nearly 34 hours having passed since the injury, doctors at Guangzhou Heping Orthopedic Hospital successfully restored blood flow to the finger in just one hour!

Accident While Working Abroad, Rushing Back to Guangzhou with Severed Finger

Around 11 a.m. on May 19th, 24-year-old A'qiang (pseudonym) from Guangzhou suffered a complete amputation of his right index finger when a steel wire from a faulty machine cut him at a factory in a Southeast Asian country. The injury was urgent, but after visiting two local hospitals, A'qiang was told that replantation surgery was not possible.

The young A'qiang was unwilling to give up. Determined to save his finger, he decided to return to China for better treatment. His company booked him the earliest flight. The next day, he flew back to Guangzhou with the severed finger, properly preserved with ice.

At 20:41 that night, A'qiang finally arrived at Guangzhou Heping Orthopedic Hospital. By then, nearly 34 hours had passed since his injury!

The longer a severed finger remains detached, the higher the risk of tissue ischemia and necrosis, and the success rate of replantation plummets. Medically, the golden time for finger replantation is 6-8 hours after injury. Beyond this window, cells are prone to irreversible damage, making replantation extremely difficult.

However, the Trauma and Microsurgery Department One team led by Director Chen Longfeng, who received the patient, did not hesitate. They quickly assessed: the severed finger was relatively well-preserved. Despite the extended time, there was still hope.

'Embroidery' Under the Microscope, One Hour to Revive Blood Flow

Time was of the essence. Every minute that blood flow was restored earlier increased the chance of survival. Director Chen Longfeng's team immediately opened a green channel for A'qiang and performed emergency finger replantation surgery.

Under the microscope, Director Chen Longfeng's team performed careful debridement and meticulously anastomosed the severed blood vessels and nerves, akin to 'embroidery'. In just one hour, blood flow was successfully restored to A'qiang's severed index finger, and the previously pale and shriveled finger regained its rosy color.

Post-surgery, blood circulation in A'qiang's index finger was good, with normal skin temperature and tension. The replanted finger survived stably and is currently undergoing smooth recovery.

Director Chen Longfeng explained that the successful replantation after 34 hours of detachment was due to the dual guarantee of scientific preservation of the severed finger and highly efficient, precise surgery. It also reflects the hospital's mature technical expertise in the field of complex, ultra-long duration finger replantation. "As long as the severed finger is properly preserved and vascular conditions allow, we will not easily give up even if it exceeds the conventional time limit," stated Director Chen Longfeng.

Expert Reminder: Remember the 'Dry and Cold' Principle for Severed Finger Preservation

The outcome of this replantation beyond the golden window is gratifying, but Director Chen Longfeng especially emphasizes: not all severed fingers can last 34 hours! For the success rate of finger replantation, correct preservation is as crucial as the golden time.

Correct Preservation: Wrap the severed finger in clean gauze, place it in a sealed plastic bag, and then put it in a container with ice for dry refrigeration. Avoid direct contact between the finger and the ice. Never soak it in water, alcohol, or disinfectant.

After proper preservation, immediately send the injured person to a hospital with microsurgical replantation capabilities for treatment, buying precious time for replantation.

Director Chen Longfeng reminds everyone to take proper safety precautions while working or operating machinery. Once an accident like finger amputation occurs, it is essential to handle it calmly and scientifically to create conditions for the finger's "rebirth".
